ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced their winners for the Winter Commissioner's Award, and four Lakers earned the honor. Track and field athletes
Myles Kerner,
Erika Beistle, and
Caleb Futter, as well as women's basketball player
Rylie Bisballe all earned the honor.
Myles Kerner has been named a GLIAC Commissioner's Award honoree for the 2023-2024 winter season. Kerner ended the indoor track and field season as the 2024 Indoor National Champion in the men's shot put, throwing a distance of 19.31m. Kerner claimed back-to-back National Titles, as he was also the 2023 Indoor National shot put Champion. Additionally, Kerner finished in 14th place in the men's weight throw at Indoor Nationals with a throw of 19.43m. Kerner led the Grand Valley State Lakers to a National Runner-Up team title recording a team score of 56.5 points. At the 2024 Indoor GLIAC Championships, Kerner earned first place in the men's weight throw and second place in the men's shot put, finishing as the 2024 GLIAC Athlete of the Meet honors.
Myles Kerner ended his 2023-2024 indoor season as a First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Region, recording seven first-place finishes on the season. Additionally, Kerner was ranked No.1 in the men's shot put and No.11 in the men's weight throw throughout Division II. At Grand Valley, Kerner holds the men's indoor and outdoor shot put school record with a distance of 19.71m (indoor) and 19.85m (outdoor), as well as the Big Meet and Kelly Family Sports Center record with a throw of 19.57m. In the classroom, Kerner finished with a 3.9 GPA, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic and the GLIAC Academic Excellence honors.
Erika Beistle has been named a GLIAC Commissioner's Award honoree for the 2023-24 winter season. Beistle won the 2024 Indoor National Championship in women's shot put with a throw of 16.37m, leading the Lakers to a fourth-place finish with a team score of 48 points. Additionally, Beistle earned first-team All-America honors. At the 2024 Indoor GLIAC Championships, Beistle won an individual GLIAC Championship in shot put with a toss of 14.72m, helping the Lakers to their 25th consecutive Indoor GLIAC Championship. She was named the GLIAC Field Athlete of the Year and earned first-team All-Region honors. In the 2023-2024 indoor season, Beistle finished with five first-place finishes including a personal best throw of 16.77m at the Holiday Open. She ended her season ranked No. 1 in women's shot put in Division II. In the classroom, Beistle finished with a 3.75 GPA, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic and the GLIAC Academic Excellence honors.
Caleb Futter has been named a GLIAC Commissioner's Award honoree for the 2023-24 winter season, after claiming an individual National Championship title in the men's mile with a time of 4:18.02. Additionally, Futter anchored the men's DMR squad who claimed a fourth-place finish with a time of 9:45.99 and finished in 15th place in the 3000m in a time of 8:24.23. Futter played a crucial role in the Lakers' success at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Nationals, as Grand Valley State earned the National Runner-Up title with a team score of 56.5 points. At the 2024 Indoor GLIAC Championships, Futter finished in first place in the men's mile recording a new GLIAC Meet record of 4:03.29, and second place in the men's DMR with a time of 10:01.23. Futter earned the GLIAC Track Athlete of the Year as well as the Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year honors. In the 2023-2024 indoor season, Futter recorded seven first-place finishes, with a personal best in the 800m (1:50.75), the 3000m (8:00.81), and the mile (3:58.65). Futter's personal best mile time of 3:58.65 at the Meyo Invitational pens him into the Grand Valley State record book as the new school record holder. He ended the season ranked No. 3 in the men's mile and No. 5 in the men's 3000m within all of Division II. Additionally, Futter earned First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Region honors. In the classroom, Futter finished with a 3.8 GPA, earning USTFCCCA All-Academic and the GLIAC Academic Excellence honors.
Junior forward
Rylie Bisballe had a massive season for the GLIAC regular season and tournament Champion Lakers. Bisballe earned D2CCA and WBCA Honorable Mention All-American honors, as well as was named the GLIAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. She led the Lakers with 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest, totaling 461 points and 246 total rebounds, ranking in the top five in the GLIAC in both categories. The Lake City native added 58 assists, 40 steals, and 38 blocks for the nation's second-best defensive unit. The four-time First-Team All-Region and All-GLIAC honoree, Bisballe tallied five double-doubles and scored the 1,000th point of her career during the year. She was awarded as a CSC Academic All-District selection for her efforts in the classroom.
