ALLENDALE – The No. 14 Grand Valley State softball team returned home and split a GLIAC doubleheader against Ferris State Sunday (Apr. 14) afternoon. The Lakers won game one 2-1 and fell in game two 1-0. GVSU is now 23-12 on the season and 6-6 in GLIAC play.
Game One: W, 2-1
Ferris State opened up the scoring the fifth inning. The Bulldogs led the inning with a triple to left center and notched a two-out single to score the game's opening run. The Lakers quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame. GVSU loaded the bases off a Ferris State error with two outs.
Morgan Spicer delivered with a 2-run single to left center to give the Lakers the lead.
Ashley Platek retired the Bulldogs in the next two innings as the Lakers would hang on to win game one 2-1. Platek got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all seven innings allowing just one run off five hits with two strikeouts.
Morgan Spicer batted 1-3 with two RBI's, while
Jenna Ballard and
Megan Koenigshof each notched a hit.
Carsyn Segorski and
Eliana Eiland scored both runs for the Lakers.
Game Two: L, 1-0
After five scoreless innings in game two, Ferris State broke open the scoring in the sixth inning with an RBI infield single. The Lakers outhit the Bulldogs 7-5 but were unable to find the equalizer as Ferris State claimed the 1-0 win in game two.
Morgan Spicer led the Lakers offensively going 2-3 at the plate with a walk.
Kelsey Komorous hit 2-4, while
Eliana Eiland,
Hannah Hollister, Jenna ballard, and
MaryJane Goodman each added a hit.
Genesis Eggart got the start in the circle and tossed all seven innings allowing one run off five hits with four strikeouts.
