No. 14 Lakers Fall in Doubleheader at Wayne State

DETROIT – The No. 14 Grand Valley State softball team dropped both games in a mid-week GLIAC doubleheader against Wayne State Wednesday (Apr. 10) evening in Detroit. The Lakers fell in game one 4-3 before falling in game two 4-2 to move to 22-11 on the season. 
 
Game One: L, 4-3
 
Wayne State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. The Warriors scored the opening run off an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. The Warriors added to their lead in the third inning with two runs to make it 3-0. 
 
GVSU would get on the board in the fifth with three runs to tie the game at three. Hannah Hollister got things started with a bunt single followed by a Morgan Spicer single to advance Hollister to third. Next batter, Kelsey Komorous singled through the left side bringing home Hollister to put the Lakers on the board. Next at bat, Jenna Ballard tied the game with a double to right field that scored Komorous all the way from first.
 
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Warriors got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh and notched a single to center field to score the winning run in game one. 
 
Hannah Hollister led the Lakers offensively going 3-4 at the plate with a run scored. Morgan Spicer notched two hits and scored a run. Kelsey Komorous notched her team leading 34th RBI of the season. Jenna Ballard drove in two runs on a double. 
 
Game Two: L, 4-2
 
The Lakers got on the board first in game two in the opening inning. Hannah Hollister led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Kelsey Komorous drove home Hollister with a single through the right side to make it 1-0 GVSU. The Lakers would make it 2-0 off a Jenna Ballard sacrifice bunt that scored Hollister.
 
Wayne State would get on the board in the fourth inning to cut the Laker lead in half. The Warriors would tie the game at two in the fifth inning on an RBI single to right field. In the sixth inning, Wayne State scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead for their first lead of the game off a sacrifice flyout and RBI single. The Warrior would hold off the Lakers in the seventh to claim the win in game two. 
 
GVSU compiled seven hits from seven different players. Hannah Hollister notched a hit and scored both Laker runs. Kelsey Komorous hit an RBI single and Jenna Ballard added a hit and drove in a run. Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle for the Lakers and allowed two runs in five innings pitched.
 
The Lakers will return home this Sunday (Apr. 14) for a GLIAC doubleheader against rival Ferris State. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.
