PITTSBURG, KANSAS – After day one of the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships, Grand Valley finds themselves in second and fifth place. The lady Lakers currently sit in second place with a team score of 23 points after competing within three events today. While the men are tied for fifth with a team score of 9 points after competing in two events on day one.

In the Field
In the men's weight throw 
James Mackey JR. was the first Grand Valley State athlete to record points for the Lakers, as he claimed fifth place with a new personal-best distance of 20.97m. 
For the women, Alaina Omondoe finished in sixth place in the weight throw with a distance of 19.36m. 
Taylor DeHommel cleared a huge personal-best height of 4.12m in the women's pole vault, as she claimed fourth place on the women's side recording five points for the women. 
On the Track
Caleb Futter, 
Klaudia O'Malley and 
Maria Mitchell all advanced to the finals (Saturday, March 9
th), in the mile. 
Scott Spaanstra and 
Taryn Chapko both advanced to the finals in the 800m. 
In the women's 5000m, Grand Valley State finished with two Lakers in the Top 8 led by 
Ana Tucker. Tucker recorded a new personal-best time of 16:08.43, finishing in third place. 
Natalie Graber rounded out the Top 8, claiming eighth place with a time of 16:21.39.
Day one ended with the men's and women's distance medley relay. The men's squad consisting of 
Patrick Lyell, 
Myles Rhodes, 
Scott Spaanstra and 
Caleb Futter finished in fourth place with a time of 9:45.99. While the women's team, 
Maria Mitchell, 
Kate Zang, 
Taryn Chapko and 
Klaudia O'Malley secured a second place finish with a time of 11:22.63.
The Lakers first event begins on Saturday, March 9
