ST. LOUIS, MO. – The GVSU finished out their Spring Break road trip with a matchup against 12
th ranked Maryville. Neither offense could get in a rhythm as the defenses were dominant for most of the day, but the Saints found just enough to pull out a 7-6 win.
The lone goal of the opening quarter belonged to
Hailey Crittenden, as she just over five minutes into the game on a power play shot.
In the second quarter, Maryville scored the first four goals to go up 4-1, but
Sydney Stone got one back for GVSU, as they trailed by two at the break.
The Saints got two more to begin the second half, taking their biggest lead of the day at 6-2. The Lakers fought back, as Crittenden got a pass from
Zoe Ziegler and scored, then
Ella Boose put one past the goalie to make it 6-4 heading into the fourth.
Maryville got a goal back early in the final period to go back up by three. The Lakers tried their best to come back, as
Maddy Champagne and Boose both scored to get within one, but they could not get one final goal and suffered their first loss of the season.
Hailey Crittenden and
Ella Boose both scored twice for the Lakers, while Syndey Stone and
Maddy Champagne had one each.
Zoe Ziegler and
Delaney Smith both registered an assist. Smith grabbed five draw controls and Champagne had three.
The Lakers caused 10 of the Saints 13 turnovers on the day.
Hope Leinen caused three, while
Ashleigh Rothe,
Elora Ferrie, and Stone all caused two.
Kaylyn Cater made three saves and picked up three groundballs in the cage.
