WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State softball team swept day two at the Spring Games in Florida with a 3-1 win over Edinboro and a 3-0 shutout over Minnesota State. The Lakers improve to 10-3 on the season and have now won seven games in a row.
Game One vs Edinboro – W, 3-1
Edinboro jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning on a fielder's choice. The Lakers got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring all three runs in the inning.
Jenna Ballard led off the inning with a single through the right side.
Faith Edwards advanced the pinch runner
Eliana Eiland to second on a sacrifice bunt. After the Lakers put runners on second and third,
Morgan Spicer doubled to left field to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead scoring Eiland and Hollister. Spicer would later score off an Edinboro error.
Jenna Ballard batted 3-3, while Spicer went 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Kelsey Komorous,
MaryJane Goodman, and
Megan Koenigshof each recorded a hit.
Ashley Platek got the start in the circle and earned the win (2-2) after tossing all seven innings allowing just one run off two hits. Platek struck out a season high 10 Edinboro batters.
Game Two vs Minnesota State – W, 3-0
Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings of play with each team recording one hit during that span. The Lakers found the scoreboard in the fourth inning to make it1-0.
Kelsey Komorous doubled to left center to score
Morgan Spicer all the way from first.
GVSU added two runs in the fifth to make it 3-0.
Nevaeh Ingram singled to left field and was pinch ran by
Faith Edwards.
Eliana Eiland singled up the middle to advance Edwards to second. After both runers advanced off a sacrifice bunt, Spicer notched a sacrifice fly to center field to score Edwards. Next batter, Komorous singled to left center scoring Eiland.
Nevaeh Ingram started in the circle and tossed all seven innings earning the win to improve to 2-0. Ingram did not allow a run off four hits and struck out five. Komorous went 2-3 at the plate with two runs batted in. Eiland hit 2-3 with a run scored, while
Hannah Hollister batted 2-4 in the win.
GVSU will be back tomorrow for two more games at the Spring Games in Florida. The Lakers will take on Dominican (N.Y.) at 1:30 PM before taking on Southwest Minnesota State at 6:00 PM. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports. Follow @gvsusoftball for live in-game updates.
