No. 7 Lakers Split Friday Doubleheader at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7 Grand Valley State softball team split Friday's GLIAC doubleheader on the road against Ferris State. The Lakers fell 2-1 in game one before defeating the Bulldogs 2-1 in eight innings in game two. GVSU moves to 20-7 on the season. 
 
Game One: L, 2-1
 
Ferris State scored both runs in the third inning. The bulldogs took the lead off a Laker error and made it 2-0 on an RBI single to center field. The Lakers got on the board in the sixth inning. Jenna Ballard delivered with a two-out single to left field to score Komorous.
 
Ferris State would close out GVSU in the seventh to earn the one-run win in game one. Kylie Swierkos got the start in the circle and suffered the loss after allowing two runs, zero earned with seven strikeouts. Jenna Ballard went 1-3 with an RBI, while Liberti Fair added a hit. Hannah Hollister stole two bases and scored a run.
 
Game Two: W, 2-1 (8-INNINGS)
 
GVSU got on the board first in game two in the fourth inning. Morgan Spicer singled to right field with two outs in the inning. Next batter, Liberti Fair launched a double to left center that allowed Spicer to score all the way from first for the game's first run. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out, but Genesis Eggart pitches out of the jam to keep the Lakers up by one.
 
Ferris State would tie the game in the sixth on an unearned run. Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. In the eighth inning, Morgan Spicer led the inning off with a triple. Two batters later, MaryJane Goodman singled up the middle to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. 
 
Eggart would close out the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the eighth to give GVSU the win and a split of the doubleheader. Eggart earned the win after tossing all eight innings allowing one run, zero earned with 
 
Morgan Spicer went 3-4 with two triples and two runs scored. Liberti Fair batted 2-3 with a double, RBI, and walk. MaryJane Goodman and Jenna Ballard each went 2-4 at the plate, while Goodman drove in the game-winning RBI. Hannah Hollister added two hits.
 
The Lakers will return home for their first home game of the 2024 season on Tuesday (Apr. 2) afternoon against Hillsdale. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 PM at the GVSU Softball Field.
