Lakers Defeat ODU; Falls to LMU on Opening Day

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Grand Valley State softball team opened up the 2024 season at the Lincoln Memorial Invitational. The Lakers defeated Ohio Dominican 3-1 in game one before falling to Lincoln Memorial 7-5 in game two. 
 
Game One vs Ohio Dominican – W, 3-1
 
Ohio Dominican opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning. The Panthers led off the inning with a walk and two batters later scored on an RBI double to left field. The Lakers quickly answered with a run in the bottom half to tie the game at one. Hannah Hollister led off the inning with an infield single and stole second on the next at bat. Two batters later, Kelsey Komorous notched an infield single to score Hollister. 
 
In the second inning, the Lakers brought across two runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Faith Edwards led the inning off with a walk. Next batter, MaryJane Goodman doubles down the left field line to advance Edwards to third. Jasmine Mauk notched her first collegiate RBI next at bat to give the Lakers the lead. Megan Koenigshof would later score Goodman to make it 3-1.
 
GVSU would keep Ohio Dominican off the scoreboard the rest of the way to claim the two-run win in the first game of the 2024 season. Genesis Eggart got the start on the mound and picked up the win tossing all seven innings allowing just one run off three hits, while striking out seven batters.
 
Kelsey Komorous led the Lakers offensively going 2-2 from the plate with an RBI and walk. Hannah Hollister and MaryJane Goodman each went 1-3 with a run scored. Faith Edwards walked and scored a run. Jasmine Mauk and Megan Koenigshof each drove in a run.
 
Game Two vs Lincoln Memorial – L, 7-4
 
Lincoln Memorial got off to a fast start scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Lakers responded in the top of the second with two runs to pull within one. Faith Edwards got the Lakers on the board with her first collegiate RBI on a single to right field that scored MaryJane Goodman. Next batter, Hannah Hollister doubled to left field to score Jasmine Mauk.
 
Lincoln Memorial would regain a three-run lead in the third inning off two runs to go up 5-2. The Lakers would pull within one again in the sixth inning. Edwards doubled to left center to score Megan Koenigshof. Hollister at the next at bat singled to score Goodman. The Railsplitters answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and would hang on for the 7-4 win.
 
Ashley Platek got the start on the mound and suffered the loss. Edwards went 3-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI's. Hollister batted 3-4 with a double and two RBI's. Koenigshof notched two hits and scored a run. Goodman scored two runs and drew a walk. 
 
The Lakers will conclude the Lincoln Memorial Tournament this weekend tomorrow (Feb. 18) when they play Lock Haven at 11:00 AM and Ohio Dominican at 3:00 PM.
