Lakers Tie Minnesota State 1-1, Fall 5-4 in Penalty Kicks

MANKATO, Minn. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team tied Minnesota State 1-1 but fell 5-4 in penalty kicks in the Elite Eight Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon. The Lakers end their season with a 15-1-8 record.
 
GVSU outshot Minnesota State 26-25 and 11-7 on goal. Minnesota State had five corner kicks, while the Lakers had two. 
 
The Lakers struck first late in the first half in the 40th minute. Sarah Fromm scored her team leading fifth goal of the season off assists by Alex Williams and Kendall Aikens. Off a free kick, Mackenzie Ford sent a pass to Aikens who played it to Williams. Williams played a great touch to Fromm in the middle of the box. Fromm kicked is with the left foot past the keeper for the game's first goal.
 
In the second half, GVSU recorded three shots in the first three minutes. Two of them were saved by the Minnesota State goalkeeper and one went just wide left. Goalkeeper Cailynn Junk made a diving save to keep the lead at one in the 53rd minute. 
 
Minnesota State would find the equalizer in the 82nd minute with a shot from the top of the box. GVSU would make a late push in the second half with a pair of shots by Ryann Fetty, but the game would remain tied and go to overtime. 
 
The Lakers dominated possession in the first overtime period, outshooting the Mavericks 6-0. In the second overtime, Minnesota State outshot GVSU 3-2. Minnesota State would win 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance in the NCAA tournament. 
 
Cailynn Junk made six saves in goal for the Lakers. Alli French led GVSU with six total shots with three on goal. Emma Chudik recorded five shots with two on goal, while Sarah Fromm scored her fifth goal of the season on three shots. Kennedy Bearden added three shots with one on goal.
