SAGINAW, MICH. – The top-ranked GVSU women's basketball team began GLIAC play on the road with the Battle of the Valleys against Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers dominated the game from start to finish, routing the Cardinals 93-36. The win moves them to 8-0 on the season and now 1-0 in GLIAC play.
GVSU started out hot, getting out to an 11-2 run over the first five minutes of the game. The offensive output continued to close out the quarter, ending with an 11-2 run as well, to lead 22-4 after 10 minutes.
The Laker offense continued to pour it on in the second quarter, scoring 21 points over the second 10 minutes of action, leading 43-16 at the break.
The Cardinals scored five of the first seven points of the second half, but
Abrie Cabana hit a triple to ignite a 24-0 run, that she also ended with another three.
Rylie Bisballe hit two layups and
Maya White closed out the quarter with another bucket to put GVSU up 75-25 with one quarter to play.
SVSU started the final period on an 8-3 run, with the only Laker points coming on a
Ellie Droste three-pointer.
Sydney Cherney ended the run with another Laker triple, which started an 11-0 GVSU run to go up 89-33. After a Cardinal here, White and Cherney each hit another basket to put the Lakers up by 57, the largest win of the season for GVSU.
Rylie Bisballe led all scorers with 16 points on 7-9 shooting, adding four assists, three steals, and two blocks.
MacKenzie Bisballe had 11 points, grabbing five boards, and tallying three steals.
Ellie Droste and
Megan Crow each had 10 points. Five Lakers had three or more steals, led by
Avery Zeinstra's five, as they forced 38 Cardinal turnovers, scoring 48 points off those turnovers.
