ALLENDALE – The No. 19 Grand Valley State women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw Thursday (Nov. 7) evening against Northern Michigan. The Lakers move to 11-1-5 on the season and 8-1-4 in the GLIAC.
GVSU got on the board first in the 25
th minute off a header by
Ella Kleiver.
Abby Winn sent a cross into the box from the right side where
Kendall Aikens got a header on it. Her shot was stopped by the goalkeeper, but the rebound went right to Kleiver who headed it past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
The Lakers would take the one goal lead into halftime as they outshot the Wildcats 9-8 in the opening 45 minutes of play including a 6-4 corner kick advantage.
In the second half, Northern Michigan would find the equalizer late in the 82
nd minute. The Wildcats sent a ball in from midfield the deflected off a bunch of players but went right to a Wildcat forward who was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Ella Kleiver led the Lakers with her fourth goal of the season on two shots on goal.
Alli French led GVSU with three total shots with two on goal.
Kendall Aikens added an assist with two shots on goal, while
Ryann Fetty and
Abby Winn each added two shots.
Cailynn Junk got the start in goal and made seven saves.
GVSU will close out the regular season at home when they host Michigan Tech Saturday (Nov. 9) afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field.
