ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the 19
th consecutive season and will host Drury for the Midwest Regional Championship. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM Sunday (Dec. 1) afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field.
GVSU is ranked number three in the Midwest Region and traveled to St. Louis, Missouri for the first and second rounds last weekend. The Lakers defeated number six Missouri – St. Louis 2-0 before defeating the host number two Maryville 1-0.
Freshman
Kendall Aikens scored the game-winning in the win over Missouri – St. Louis which was her third goal of the season. Senior
Kennedy Bearden scored the only goal in the win over Maryville for her fourth goal of the season. Goalkeeper
Cailynn Junk made the save of the year in the win against Maryville. Junk stopped a penalty kick by Maryville with just 20 seconds left in the game to send the Lakers to the Sweet 16.
GVSU had four named to the D2CCA Midwest all-region teams. Senior
Ryann Fetty was named a first team selection with three goals and four assists for 10 points on the season. Defenders
Kacy Lauer and
Daan Louwerse earned second team honors. Lauer and Louwerse lead the Lakers in minutes played and were All-GLIAC selections. Goalkeeper
Cailynn Junk was named to the second team All-Region appearing in 21 games posting 11 individual shutouts.
Drury is ranked number five in the Midwest Region and traveled to Ashland, Ohio for the first and second rounds. The Panthers defeated Northern Michigan 4-1 in the first round and then knocked off the top seed Ashland 1-0 in the second round.
Drury improved to 16-2-4 on the season and have outscored their opponents 48-11 on the season. Junior Holland Hawkins leads Drury with 11 goals for 22 points on the season. Hawkins has scored three game-winning goals on the season. All-region performer Kourtney Tucker is second on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points on the season. All-region selection Andrea Camargo leads the Drury defense and leads the team in minutes played. Goalkeeper Katy Fitzler leads the country with 14 shutouts and is one shy of breaking the program record.
