GVSU ended the regular season at 25-2 overall and 14-2 in league play, winning four straight heading into the postseason. They took down Wayne State in a dramatic reverse sweep on Thursday night, then beat Roosevelt in four sets in the regular season finale. Kendall Stover led the way offensively all weekend, winning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. The junior had a season-high 18 kills on Thursday, then added 15 more on Saturday. The Laker defense had 12 blocks in both matches, with Paige Sanders having 7.5 and Brianna Stawski adding 6.5. GVSU has advanced to the GLIAC Championship each of the past two seasons, once as the six seed and once as the top overall seed.

The eleventh-ranked Lakers have beaten Davenport in both matchups this season, winning in straight sets at home, then taking the away matchup in four sets. At home, Jordyn Gates and Sanders each had seven kills, but it was the defense that led the way, totaling 15 blocks and holding the Panthers to a .046 hitting percentage. On the road, Davenport took the first set, before GVSU responded with the next three. Gates and Meghan O'Sullivan each had 11 kills, with Gates posting a triple-double. Including the two wins this season, GVSU has won six straight over their crosstown rivals.

Davenport has struggled over the past few weeks, dropping seven of their past nine matchups. Their two wins in that time have come via sweeps over Roosevelt and Parkside. Outside hitter Abby Alan is seventh in the conference with 351 kills and setter Mehl Hansen has dished out 787 assists, good for fifth in the league. The Panthers are in the GLIAC Tournament for the fifth straight season, but they have lost in the quarterfinal round each of the past two years, including once to the Lakers, back in 2022.
