MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team tied Saginaw Valley State but fell in penalty kicks in the GLIAC semifinals Friday (Nov. 15) afternoon. The Lakers move to 12-1-7 on the season and will wait to hear their seeding in the NCAA Tournament.
Saginaw Valley State opened in the scoring in the 32
nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. GVSU outshot the Cardinals 13-7 in the opening half with eight shots on goal. Both teams produced one corner kick in the opening 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Lakers found the equalizer in the 74
th minute. Freshman
Sarah Fromm scored her third goal of the season off a beautiful pass by
Alli French who dished out her second assist of the season. GVSU would outshoot SVSU 12-9 in the second half as the game would remain tied after 90 minutes of play.
Both teams would be held off the scoreboard in both overtime periods as the game would be decided in penalty kicks. GVSU outshot the Cardinals 7-2 in the overtime periods and 32-18 in the game. The Lakers notched 18 shots on goal, while the Cardinals notched six. GVSU would fall 3-2 in penalty kicks.
Alli French led the Lakers with an assist and six shots with four on goal in 85 minutes played.
Sarah Fromm scored the only goal for the Lakers on four shots.
Ryann Fetty added four shots with two on goal, while
Kacy Lauer notched four shots with one on goal in 104 minutes played.
Taylor Reid has three shots on goal in 98 minutes.
Daan Louwerse and
Mackenzie Ford played all 100 minutes.
Cailynn Junk made five saves in goal including one save in penalty kicks.
