Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Takes Down Tiffin and Clarion to Move to 5-0

ALLENDALE, MICH. – One day two of the Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic, the GVSU women's volleyball team kept up their winning ways, taking down Tiffin in four sets, then closing out the day with a sweep of previously unbeaten Clarion. The two wins move the Lakers to 5-0, marking the best start in program history since 2007.

In game one of the night, the Lakers beat the Dragons 3-1, by scores of 25-13, 26-28, 25-18, and 25-17. GVSU controlled the first set from the opening serve, going up 9-4 and staying on a roll to win the set by 12 points. Set two was a battle, with Tiffin leading for much of the match, as they went up 11-4, but the Lakers battled back to eventually tie the game at 20. The two teams traded points after that, but Tiffin scored four of the final five points to tie the match at one. In set three, the Dragons again held an early lead at 5-1, but the Lakers showed the resilience, bouncing back to take the lead at 9-8, and they would never relinquish that lead for the rest of the set, as they retook the lead in the match. Set four was much like the first set, as the Lakers controlled it from the very beginning, never letting the Dragons even tie the match, as they completed the four-game victory.

Kendall Stover had another big game, putting away 16 kills and tallying 17 digs. Jordyn Gates recorded her first triple-double of the year, notching 24 digs, 22 assists, and 14 kills. Sarah Wight had 15 kills and six blocks, while Meghan O'Sullivan had 10 kills. Rachel Jacquay led the team with 27 assists and Madison Gates added 16 digs.

In game two it was a clash of two unbeaten teams, but in the end the Lakers proved to be the better team, sweeping the Golden Eagles 25-11, 25-10, and 25-17. GVSU dominated the first two sets, never lead Clarion get a chance to get in either of the sets. Clarion took the early lead in set three at 6-2, but the Lakers came back to tie it a 7 apiece. The two teams traded a few points, but GVSU took the lead for good at 10-9 and ended the game on a 15-8 run, capped off by a Brianna Stawski to give the Lakers their fifth straight season.

Wight had 11 kills in game two, while Stawski had 10 kills and three blocks. Jordyn Gates and Kate Goudreau had nine kills, with Gates adding 15 assists and eight digs. Rachel Jacquay dished out 27 assists and Julia Blaney had 17 digs.

The Lakers close out the tournament tomorrow at 4:00 with a matchup against Ursuline. The game will be streamed and there will be live stats available as well.
