Lakers Down Mary 2-0 Friday Afternoon

Improve to 1-1-1 on the season

MANKATO, Minn. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated Mary 2-0 Friday (Sept. 8) at the campus of Minnesota State in Mankato, Minnesota. The Lakers improve to 1-1-1 on the season, while Mary falls to 1-1-1.

The Lakers dominated with a 15-4 shot advantage and 8-3 on shots on goal advantage. GVSU had five corners to Mary's one.

In the first half, the Lakers led 7-1 in shots and 4-1 shots on goal. Graduate Avery Lockwood opened up the scoring for the Lakers in the 19th minute off the assist from sophomore Amanda Palmer. Palmer placed a great ball from the right side into the middle of the box where Lockwood was there to kick it home with the right foot at the low left corner of the goal. That goal was Lockwood's first as a Laker.

In the second half, senior Taylor Reid made it 2-0 GVSU in the 64th minute. Senior Mackenzie Jones placed a beautiful ball from beyond midfield where Reid was able to run it down past the defenders and score for her first of the year. The Lakers would shut down Mary earning their first shutout of the season.

Redshirt freshman Isabel Imes got her first career start in goal and made three saves for her first career shutout victory. Reid led the Lakers with a goal and three shots on goal in 61 minutes played, while freshman Alli French notched three shots with one on goal in 44 minutes. Avery Lockwood notched a goal with two shots and junior Ryann Fetty also recorded three shots with one on goal in the win. Sophomore Kacy Kauer led all Laker field players with 86 minutes played, while Jones played 80 minutes.
