Lakers Pick up Huge Road Win Against No. 8 Minnesota State Sunday

Improve to 2-1-1 on the season

MANKATO, Minn. – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team picked up a huge road win by defeating No. 8 Minnesota State 1-0 Sunday (Sept. 10) in Mankato, Minnesota. The Lakers improve to 2-1-1 and finish the weekend trip to Minnesota with a 2-0 record.

GVSU dominated most of the game and notched a season high 22 shots to the Mavericks 14. The Lakers had eight shots on goal to the Mavericks four and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In the first half, the Lakers led 11-5 in shots, 3-2 on goal as both teams were held scoreless. In the second half, the Lakers continued to dominate with 10 shots in the first 20 minutes of the half.

Later in 73rd minute, Minnesota State was called for a hand ball inside the box that led to a GVSU penalty kick. Sophomore Kacy Lauer stepped up to take the kick and scored on the low left corner of the goal to put the Lakers up 1-0. That goal was Lauer's second of the season and first penalty kick goal of her career. The Mavericks would end getting a free kick from just outside the box, but the shot sailed high, and the Lakers would hang on for the win.

Lauer led the Lakers with a goal and three shots on goal, while senior Taylor Reid notched three shots. Graduate Avery Lockwood and junior Ryann Fetty each had two shots with one on goal. Sophomore Amanda Palmer added two shots in the win. Daan Louwerse, Mackenzie Ford, and Lauer each played all 90 minutes. Junior Kendall Robertson got the start in net and notched four saves earning her first shutout victory of the season.

The Lakers will return home next weekend for the start of GLIAC action. GVSU will face Ferris State Friday (Sept. 15) under the lights at 7:00 PM and then will host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1:00 PM.
