Lakers Open Up GLIAC Play with Big 2-1 Win Over Ferris State

Improve to 3-1-1 on the season

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's soccer team opened up GLIAC play with a huge 2-1 win over Ferris State at home Friday (Sept. 15) night in front of a crowd of 837. The Lakers improve to 3-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while Ferris State falls to 2-2-1.

GVSU opened the scoring up early in the sixth minute. Ryann Fetty and Emma Chudik made a great give and go pass where Chudik would find space for a shot at the top center of the box that snuck in off the right post to put the Lakers up 1-0. That goal was Chudik's first goal as a Laker, while Fetty picked up her first assist on the season.

Ferris State answered right back six minutes later in the 11th minute off a Laker own goal in the middle of the box to tie the game at one. Both teams would head into the locker room tied at one as the Lakers outshot the Bulldogs 7-3, 5-0 on goal.

In the second half, freshman Alli French got a good look inside the box off a great insert, but her shot hit the right post in the 60th minute. One minute later, French would get another shot in the box, but this time it was saved by the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, French delivered in the 67th minute for her first collegiate goal to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Mackenzie Jones lobbed a ball up near the center of the box that was headed straight up by the Ferris State defender. French gathered the ball and turned and shot it from just outside the box into the lower right corner of the goal.

The Bulldogs made a push in the final seconds of the game getting two corner kicks with just under 20 seconds remaining. The Lakers would defend both Ferris State corners, keeping them from equalizing the game as they would hold on for the win.

Isabel Imes got the start in goal for the Lakers and improved to 2-0 on the season. French led the Lakers by scoring the game winning goal along with four shots, three on goal. Chudik notched her first goal on two shots. Claire Breault recorded three shots with two on goal, while Taylor Reid added three shots with one on goal. Fetty had two shots and assisted on the opening goal. Kacy Lauer, Daan Louwerse, Mackenzie Ford, and Mackenzie Jones all played the full 90 minutes in the field, while Reid saw 82 minutes on the field.

The Lakers will be back in action this Sunday (Sept. 17) when they host Saginaw Valley State for alumni day and kids' day. After the game GVSU will host their second annual 100 kids' vs the team. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field. Visit gvsulakers.com for ticket information and links to live video and live stats. Follow @GVSUSoccer on Twitter for live in-game updates.
