The #2-ranked Grand Valley State football team will open the 2023 campaign, its 52nd year of football, Thursday, August 31 at #3-ranked Colorado School of Mines. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at Marv Kay Stadium in Golden, Colorado. First-year head coach
Scott Wooster, the eighth head coach in program history, will lead an experienced group of players that includes six preseason all-american and a postseason honors candidate at every position.
• Grand Valley State is 2-0 versus the Colorado School of Mines, with both wins coming in Allendale. GVSU won a 25-22 meeting a year ago and claimed a 35-13 victory in a 2010 NCAA first-round playoff matchup.
• GVSU has now been ranked in the top 10 of a national preseason poll 19 times since 2002 (22 polls), including 16 top five rankings and 13 top three rankings.
• The Lakers are celebrating their 52nd year of football in 2023. GVSU is the all-time winningest program in DII history with a record of 431-149-3 (.741).
• Grand Valley State is 33-18 all-time in season-openers and have won 19-of-the-last-21.
GVSU is 7-0 all-time versus programs from the State of Colorado. 4-0 vs. Colorado State-Pueblo, 2-0 vs. Colorado School of Mines and 1-0 vs. Northern Colorado.
