ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team fell 2-1 against Davenport in the final game of the season series Wednesday (May 3) afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers drop to 27-16 on the season, 14-12 in the GLIAC.
Davenport got on the board in the top of the first inning. The Panthers led off the game with a single followed by a double and would score off a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 1-0. Davenport made it 2-0 in the second inning. The Panthers led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Two batters later the run scored off an RBI single.
The Lakers got on the board in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Connor Schuman led off the inning with a double off the right field wall. Schuman advanced to third on a groundout. Next batter,
Ayden VanEnkevort singled through the right side scoring Schuman. The Lakers would not be able to find the equalizer as Davenport would hang on for the one run win.
Allan Thorington got the start on the hill for the Lakers and suffered the loss after tossing seven innings allowing two hits off eight hits with two strikeouts.
Logan Wynalda tossed two scoreless innings allowing no hits with four strikeouts.
The Lakers recorded seven hits led by
Connor Schuman who went 2-3 with a double and run scored.
Ayden VanEnkevort went 1-4 with an RBI, while
Conner McCormack batted 1-3 with two walks.
Kyle Nott,
Jake Rydquist, and
Jonas Gulbrandsen each added a hit.
The Lakers will conclude the regular season this upcoming weekend when they host Saginaw Valley State for a four-game series beginning Friday (May 5) at 3:00 PM at the GVSU Baseball Field.
