PUEBLO, COLORADO – The Grand Valley State women's track and field squad sits in first place with a total of 30 points ahead of Adams State (23 pts) and Saginaw Valley State (21 pts). The men's team falls shortly behind Adams State (26 pts) and Missouri Southern (25 pts) as they head into the final day of the NCAA National Championships sitting in third place with 23 points overall.
The Grand Valley State throws team lead the way for both the men's and women's squad on day 2 of the NCAA National Championships (Friday, May 26
th), as all six competing Lakers placed within the Top 8 on both sides of the discus throw.
The lady Lakers went four for four in the women's discus throw as they claimed third, fifth, sixth and seventh place.
Emma Richards led the squad taking home a third-place finish with a throw of 49.86m, followed by
Kelsi Hulit in fourth with a new personal-best throw of 49.56m,
Margaret Stevenson in fifth (47.94m) and
Erika Beistle in seventh (47.93m) to finish out the Lakers score with a total of 15 points.
On the men's side, both competing Lakers finished within the Top 8 scoring a total of eight points for Grand Valley State.
Nathan Spitzley recorded a huge personal-best throw of 54.82m to earn a third-place finish in the men's discus throw, while James MacKey Jr. finished seventh with a distance of 53.64m.
Natalie Graber and
Caleb Futter finished out the night for both the women's and men's squad in the 3000m steeplechase, where both individuals earned fourth place overall. Graber recorded a time of 10:32.88 (fourth place) to round out the Laker women's final day two score and put them in the lead heading into day three. Additionally, Futter finished in fourth place with a time of 9:16.01 to pull the men's squad up to third place as they head into the final day.
In the prelims,
Taryn Chapko and
Brooke Barkocy move into the final rounds in their respective events. Chapko will be competing the women's final 800m on Saturday, May 27
th while Barkocy will take on the final round of the 100m hurdles.
The final day of the NCAA National Championships will begin today (Saturday, May 27
th) at 11:00 a.m (MT) with the women's pole vault followed by the remainder of the field events and the running events beginning at 7:10 p.m. (MT).
