CLEVELAND, TN – After a successful regular outdoor season, the Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field team close out their regular season as several Lakers competed in three last chance meets across multiple states this weekend in hopes to qualify for the 2023 Outdoor Track and Field Nationals.
Patrick Lyell didn't take this last chance lightly, as he closed out the regular season for the Lakers with a recording breaking time in the men's 1500m at the Lee Last Chance Meet. Lyell recorded a new personal-best and Grand Valley State school record of 3:44.76, surpassing the previous record of 3:45.18.
Scott Spaanstra finished sixth in the men's 800m recording a time of 1:49.22.
At the Oakland Last Chance meet in Rochester, Michigan, the relay squad consisting of
Antonio Passarelli, Nicolas Walper,
Steven Harris and
Myles Rhodes finished second overall in a time of 40.90. In addition, Rhodes finished first in the men's 400m with a new personal-best time of 47.10, just .03 seconds away from breaking the Grand Valley State school record of 47.07. Harris placed first in the 110m hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.95, ranking him ninth in Division II.
On the women's side,
Brooke Barkocy claimed third place in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.13. In the 3000m steeplechase,
Landyn Howell placed fifth with a time of 10:59.36. Both lady Lakers surpassed the NCAA provisional mark in their respective events.
To end out the weekend for the Lakers, competing in the pole vault at the PSU Last Chance,
Colton Emeott placed first for the Lakers clearing a height of 4.82m and meeting the NCAA provisional mark.
The NCAA will announce the final championship selections for the 2023 Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Tuesday, May 16
th. This year's Nationals will be held in Pueblo, Colorado on May 25
th – May 27
th.
