Women's Lacrosse Advances To Midwest Regional Championship

DENVER, COLO. – For the second consecutive season the GVSU women's lacrosse team matched up with Regis in the Midwest Regional Semifinals, and for the second consecutive season it was the Lakers coming out on top. GVSU took the lead midway through the second quarter and never gave it back up, as they came away with at 15-11 victory. The win moves them on to Sunday's championship game where they will play the winner of UIndy and Maryville.
 
Maddy Champagne got the Lakers on the board first, scoring just over three minutes into the game. Regis came back with three straight goals, which were quickly answered by the Lakers as Champagne assisted on a Molly Bursinger goal, the Champagne scored again to tie the game. The Rangers however would score once more before the end of the quarter to lead 4-3.
 
Sydney Stone tied the game back up at four, as she scored her first of the game less than a minute into the new period. Once again Regis answered back, scoring twice in a row to go up 6-4. The rest of the quarter belonged to the Lakers, as they ended the half on a 5-0 scoring run, as Bursinger, Hailey Crittenden, Champagne, and Stone scored unassisted goals, then Crittenden scored another off a pass from Champagne, as GV led 9-6 at the break.
 
The scoring run continued into the second quarter, as Bursinger, Crittenden, and Stone all scored again to push the Laker lead up to 12-6. The Rangers go one back before the end of the quarter, but still trailed by five heading into the final quarter of play.
 
Regis scored once more to open the fourth, before the Lakers got goals from Ella Boose, off an assist from Bursinger, then Crittenden and Bursinger each scored once more to extend the lead to 15-8. Regis tried to climb back, scoring three late goals, but it was not enough, as the Lakers knocked off the region's top seed and moved to 15-4 this season.
 
Hailey Crittenden and Molly Bursinger each scored four goals today, while Maddy Champagne and Sydney Stone each had hat tricks. Ella Boose added one goal as well. Champagne dished out three assists and Bursinger had one. Bursinger won six draw controls, with Ashleigh Rothe winning four, and Champagne won three.
 
Sarah Krause was fantastic in goal, saving a career-high 10 shots and keeping the normally potent Regis offense in check all afternoon long. In front of her Hope Leinen caused four turnovers, while Champagne, Anna Reynolds, and Aislynn Alkire all caused two apiece. Champagne and Reynolds also grabbed three groundballs as well.

The Lakers will play in the Midwest Regional Championship game on Sunday at 12:00 pm MT/2:00 pm EST. GVSU will take on the winner of the second semifinal between Maryville and UIndy.
