Laker Softball Sweeps Saginaw Valley To End Road Weekend

SAGINAW—The Grand Valley State softball team swept Saginaw Valley State for its second consecutive day of road conference doubleheader sweeps on Saturday.
 
The Lakers took game one, 11-3, in five innings and fought back from a five-run deficit  to win game tow, 10-9, in eight innings.
 
GVSU (25-3, 9-0 GLIAC) racked up 21 runs on 32 hits to defeat the Cardinals (23-9, 7-3) twice.
 
Game 1 – GVSU 11, SVSU 3 (5 Innings)
 
The GVSU offense was firing on all cylinders in the first game of the day, collecting 14 hits on its way to 11 runs.
 
The Lakers put up six runs in the second inning, getting out to an early lead.
 
Eliana Eiland, Joanna Cirrincione and Hannah Hollister all hit RBI singles. Kaitlin Lynch reached on a fielder's choice and collected an RBI as well.
 
The other two Laker second-inning runs came off a Cardinals' error. The fielding error allowed Cirrincione and Lynch to come around and score. GVSU held a, 6-0, lead after two innings.
 
GVSU would strike again in the top of the third, scoring three runs. 
 
Morgan Wagner hit an infield single with the bases loaded to drive in Lynch. Morgan Spicer was the next batter up and she hit a single to right field to drive in Cirrincione and Lydia Goble, making it, 9-0, Lakers.
 
SVSU would answer in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI single from Sarah Gersch, making it a, 9-2, Laker lead.
 
Megan Koenigshof would score on a wild pitch in the fourth, giving GVSU a, 10-2, lead. Kelsey Komorous hit an RBI double to bring home Spicer in the fifth inning, making it, 11-2.
 
The Cardinals would add a run in the fifth, but couldn't avoid the run-rule, which concluded the game after five innings.
 
Hannah Beatus started in the circle, picking up her 11th win of the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks. Beatus struck out five batters in five innings of work.
 
Game 2 – GVSU 10, SVSU 9 (8 Innings)
 
Lydia Goble provided the heroics for GVSU in the second game of the day.
 
Goble stepped into the box in the eighth inning with the game tied at, 9-9. She hit a ball over the left-center field fence for her second home run of the season, giving the Lakers a, 10-9, lead with her go ahead home run.
 
The Lakers faced a five-run deficit after three innings. GVSU trailed, 7-2, after three frames.
 
GVSU scored three runs in the fifth inning to tie the game up at nine runs, apiece.
 
Eliana Eiland reached on an error by the Saginaw Valley State left fielder and Morgan Spicer came home for the Lakers. Eiland then scored on another Cardinals' error off the bat of Kaitlin Lynch. Lynch then scored on a single from Joanna Cirrincione to tie the game.
 
The Lakers also chipped into the SVSU lead with a four-run fourth inning. 
 
Goble hit a two-run double with the bases loaded to make it a, 7-4, game with the Cardinals ahead. Morgan Wagner was next up and she singled home Goble and Cirrincione to make it, 7-6.
 
SVSU scored two runs in the fourth, giving the Cardinals a three-run lead before the Lakers tied it in the fifth.
 
The Lakers got out to a, 2-0, lead with RBI singles from Wagner and Kelsey Komorous. SVSU would go on to score seven straight before the Laker offense chipped away at the lead and Goble ultimately ended the day's scoring with her home run.
 
Hannah Beatus entered in relief and picked up the win for the Lakers. She tossed four innings and allowed just two hits. She struck out two and walked two. 
 
Ashley Platek started for the Lakers and went 2.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits. Christine Duch also pitched 1.1 innings for GVSU, allowing two runs and two hits.

The Lakers are back in action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Northwood at the GVSU Softball Field in Allendale.
