ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball split today's doubleheader against Wayne State Friday (April 14) afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers won game one 4-2 off a
Nathan Logan walk off two-run home run. GVSU is now 21-10 on the season and 9-6 in GLIAC play.
GAME ONE – W, 4-2
Wayne State jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. The Warriors tacked on two runs off four hits to take the early 2-0 lead. The Lakers got on the board in the second inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Connor Schuman led off the inning with a single to left field. A wild pitch advanced Schuman to second and
Conner McCormack singled to center field to advance Schuman to third. Two batters later,
Brendan Guciardo singled through the left side to score Schuman.
The Lakers found the equalizer in the fifth to tie the game at two.
Spencer Nelson reached base on an infield single and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs,
Nathan Logan came up with a clutch single through the right side to score Nelson.
In the seventh inning,
Jake Rydquist reached on base with a huge leadoff single. Nelson advanced Rydquist to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two out in the inning,
Nathan Logan came up clutch again, this time launching a home run to right field to walk it off for the Lakers and securing the 4-2 win. The home run was Logan's third of the season.
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the bump in game one and pitched his fifth complete game of the season. Rutkowski earned his seventh win of the season which is most in the GLIAC to improve to 7-1 on the season. The junior allowed seven hits, while striking out five and walking one. Logan led the Laker offense going 2-3 with a home run and three runs batted in.
Brendan Guciardo batted 2-3 with an RBI.
Game Two – L, 5-2
The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning by notching two runs off four hits.
Spencer Nelson and
Kyle Nott led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to go up 1-0. Later in the inning,
Conner McCormack ripped an RBI single left field to score
Nathan Logan.
Wayne State got on the board and cut the Laker lead in half with a solo home run in the third inning. The Warriors would take a 5-2 lead with a four-run seventh inning off a two-RBI double and two-run home run.
The Lakers would not be able to bring home any runs and would fall 5-2 in game two.
Colby Phipps got the start on the mound and suffered the loss (6-1) after tossing 6.1 innings pitched allowing five runs off 10 hits with six strikeouts.
Will Goebel tossed two scoreless innings of relief striking out four.
Josh Schell tossed 0.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Conner McCormack went 2-4 with an RBI, while
Spencer Nelson hit 2-5 with a double, triple, and run scored.
Kyle Nott and
Jonas Gulbrandsen each added a hit.
