GVSU Softball Sweeps Wayne State For 12th and 13th Straight Wins

ALLENDALE—The Grand Valley State softball team swept Wayne State in GLIAC action on Wednesday at the GVSU Softball Field.
 
The Lakers won the first game in five innings, 8-0, and defeated the Warriors, 5-1, in the second game of the day.
 
GVSU (29-3, 11-0 GLIAC) earned a pair of victories in its first action of the season against Wayne State (12-20, 2-10). The Lakers are now riding a 13 game winning streak, dating back to March 24.
 
Game One – GVSU 8, Wayne State 0 (5 Innings)
 
The Laker offense didn't miss a beat to start out the first game of the day, scoring three runs in the first inning.
 
Lydia Goble sent a ball deep to center field for a double, bringing home Kaitlin Lynch to open the scoring for the Lakers. Morgan Wagner singled in the next at-bat, bringing home Goble to make it a two-run lead. Kelsey Komorous drove home Wagner with a groundout to second base in the next at-bat for a, 3-0, GVSU lead.
 
GVSU came back in the second inning to score three more runs.
 
Goble sent another long fly ball to center field for another two-RBI double. Joanna Cirrincione and Lynch scored to make it a, 5-0, game. Komorous doubled to left field in the next at-bat to drive home MaryJane Goodman, who pinch ran for Goble.
 
With a, 6-0, lead headed into the third inning, the Lakers got two more to put them up eight runs.
 
Cirrincione doubled to right field with the bases loaded, bringing home Megan Koenigshof and Morgan Spicer.
 
Scoreless fourth and fifth innings led to an, 8-0, run-rule victory for the Lakers.
 
Hannah Beatus continued her stellar season, pitching all five innings and allowing just one hit. Beatus struck out five batters and earned her 14th victory of the season.
 
Game Two – GVSU 5, Wayne State 1
 
The Lakers took game two in seven innings, marking their first seven-inning game in their last seven contests.
 
GVSU put up two runs in the second inning to strike first. Liberti Fair scored on an error and Joanna Cirrincione drove home Eliana Eiland with an RBI single, giving the Lakers a, 2-0, lead.
 
Wayne State answered with an RBI single to center field, cutting the GVSU lead in half to, 2-1.
 
The Lakers added two runs in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Cirrincione and Lydia Goble.
 
Alexis McCullough scored in the fifth inning on a Morgan Spicer fielder's choice to make it, 5-1.
 
Nevaeh Ingram tossed a complete game for the Lakers. She allowed just one earned run on four Wayne State hits. The true freshman struck out five batters in a victorious effort.

The Lakers will head to Big Rapids for a doubleheader against Ferris State, slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
