Men's Golf Opens Spring Schedule With A Win

MEMPHIS, TENN. – The Grand Valley men's golf team found themselves in a familiar spot this afternoon, with a trophy in hand. The Lakers dominated the last two rounds of the Buccaneer Classic to overtake Christian Brothers and began the spring season with a victory.
 
GVSU shot sixteen under the final two rounds to finish the tournament at -15 (849) to win the event by 12 shots. Christian Brothers was second at -3 (861), while Union finished third at +10 (874), Mississippi College was fourth with at +24 (888), and Arkansas-Monticello was fifth at +51 (915).
 
Nick Krueger led the way with a fourth-place finish, shooting rounds of 70, 73, and 69 to finish at -4. Charlie Cooley and Charles DeLong both ended in a tie for seventh at -3, with Cooley shooting the final two rounds at 67 and 71, while DeLong had rounds of 72 and 71. Drew Coble was ninth, carding a final two rounds of 70 and 69 to end at -2. Bryce Wheeler birdied five holes the final two rounds to end at 13th at five over.
 
"Freshman Charlie Cooley shooting a 67 in the second round gave us a needed jumpstart," head coach Gary Bissell stated. "We are happy to start the spring off on the right foot and we are looking forward to improving as we go."  
 
This was GVSU's fifth win this season, winning four of their five fall tournaments and now capturing a win in the first tournament of the spring. They will get a chance to add another one at the Ralph Hargett Invitational on March 20th and 21st in Charlotte, North Carolina.
