Laker Men Dominate Davenport to Complete Season Sweep

CALEDONIA—The Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Davenport, 87-61, at the Davenport Student Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers (13-9, 7-5 GLIAC) dominated Davenport (6-16, 2-10) behind the hot hands of Trevon Gunter and the post play of Marius Grazulis and Chinedu Kingsley Okanu.

Gunter scored 15 points on a 5-for-10 shooting performance. All five of Gunter's field goals came from beyond the 3-point line in the first half. Gunter made four triples in the final five minutes of the first half to boost the Lakers to a significant, 44-30, halftime lead.

Grazulis notched his second double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Grazulis was 5-for-12 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds on the offensive end of the floor. Okanu also made his presence felt down low, scoring 11 points on a 4-for-7 shooting day and grabbing five rebounds.

GVSU dominated almost every facet of the game but took advantage off their own misses and in transition. The Lakers outscored Davenport, 23-4, in second chance points after collecting 17 offensive rebounds. GVSU also was firing on all cylinders in transition, outpacing the Panthers, 29-8, in fast break points.

The Lakers were a force again down low, outrebounding the Panthers, 49-30, and scored 38 points in the paint. On the perimeter, GVSU was just as good, making 12 of its 24 3-point attempts.

GVSU totaled 20 assists on Saturday for the first time since Dec. 11 when they had 20 assists against Davenport in the two squads' first meeting of the season. Trevor Smith led GVSU with seven assists and Daniel Kiely assisted on six Laker buckets.

The Lakers return to action at 8 p.m. on Thursday when they take on Michigan Tech in Allendale inside of the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
