ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field team competed at the GVSU Snowdown Showdown on Friday, February 3
rd where the men's and women's pole vault squads continued their successful 2022-2023 season as they claimed first-place on both sides
The men recorded a first through fifth place finish on the day with
James Nutt taking home first clearing a height of 4.85m, followed by
Colton Emeott also at 4.85m claiming second by a judge's decision.
Camryn Battjes,
Max Rauch and
Wyatt Alwine rounded out the Lakers Top 5 sweep with a height of 4.55m. On the women's side
Kassidie Stimmel led the team clearing a height of 3.85m, followed by
Miranda Firari and
Kaylee Koch claiming third and fifth for the Lakers with a height of 3.70m.
The success in the field continued as the women's throws team brought home another set of first place finishes on the day.
Reette Thorns clinched first in the women's shot put with a new personal-best throw of 14.10m, in addition to surpassing the DII provisional mark of 13.63m. In the women's weight throw,
Alaina Omonode placed first with a distance of 18.84m, surpassing the provisional mark as well as moving her up on the National Leaders list.
For the Laker men,
Matt Thomas led the throws team in the men's shot put, finishing in first throwing a distance of 18.06m. Byrce Reynolds,
Shane Byrne and James MacKey Jr. claimed third through fifth in the men's weight throw, with a distance of 17.79m (Reynolds), 17.42m (Byrne) and 16.94m (MacKey).
On the track,
Jacody Sikora led the Lakers with a first place in the men's 60m dash recording a time of 6.93, just shy of his previous best time of 6.92.
Myles Rhodes placed third in the men's 400m dash with a time of 49.53. For the women,
Kate Zang claimed a third place finish in the 60m dash recording a new personal-best time of 7.75.
The Lakers will be back at the Kelly Family Sports Center next weekend to host the GVSU Big Meet on Friday and Saturday.
