Lakers Host Senior Day Against Ferris State

02.24.2023

ALLENDALE--The Grand Valley State men's basketball team closes out the regular season at 3 p.m. on Saturday with a matchup against rival Ferris State.

The matchup can be seen live online via FloSports with a paid subscription. The game will be aired on radio on The Thunder (107.3 FM) with Bryan Fongers on the call.

The Lakers will celebrate Senior Day prior to Saturday's game. Daniel Kiely, Isaiah Carver-Bagley, Chinedu Kingsley Okanu and Luke Toliver will be honored for their time in a GVSU uniform.

The Lakers will also look to bounce back after a loss on Thursday to Lake Superior State. GVSU put up its lowest scoring total of the season in a, 65-57, loss. Chinedu Kingsley Okanu led GVSU in scoring with 15 points and went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Daniel Kiely led the Lakers in rebounding and assists with seven boards and three assists. The Laker loss on Thursday eliminated them from hosting a GLIAC Tournament game, so they will find out where they are going after the conclusion of GLIAC games on Saturday.

The Lakers and Bulldogs met nearly three months ago to open GLIAC play. Ferris State took the first meeting on Dec. 1, 97-68. Ferris State's point total remains the most scored by a Laker opponent this season.

SENIOR DAY
The Lakers will honor their senior class of four on Saturday prior the game. Chinedu Kingsley Okanu, Daniel Kiely, Isaiah Carver-Bagley and Luke Toliver will all be honored. All four have been integral to the Lakers' success this season.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Ferris State comes into Saturday on a five-game win streak. The Bulldogs are tied with Parkside atop the GLIAC. Ferris State has one of the best offenses in the nation. The Bulldogs are 10th in the country, averaging 86.9 points per game. Ferris State also has top-five rankings in scoring margin, rebound margin, assists per game, assist-turnover ratio and 3-point field goal percentage.

Solomon Oraegbu leads Ferris State in scoring with 17.6 points per game. Oraegbu is also the reigning GLIAC Player of the Week after scoring 38 points against Lake Superior State last week. Ben Davidson and Ethan Erickson average 13.6 points and 12.2 points per game, respectively. Davidson scored 29 against GVSU in the first meeting of the season.

POSTSEASON BOUND
The Lakers are into the GLIAC Tournament and will be making a road trip for a game on Wednesday, March 1. The Lakers' opponent is still up in the air, but GVSU will know its destination at the conclusion of Saturday's GLIAC games. GVSU's most likely matchup will be a third Battle of the Lakers up in Sault Ste. Marie, but a trip to Northern Michigan University is not out of the realm of possibility.
