Women's Basketball Set For Final Two Games Of The Regular Season

02.22.2023

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The final week of the regular season has arrived, as the women's basketball team has their final two game of the regular season this weekend, as they take on Lake Superior State on Thursday at 6pm, while they close out the regular season on Saturday by playing Ferris State at 1pm.

Grand Valley is 25-2 and 15-1 in GLIAC play and have clinched a share of the regular season title last week with a sweep of Saginaw Valley and Wayne State. With a win this weekend, or a Michigan Tech loss, GVSU would clinch the regular season outright ahead of next week's conference tournament.

In the first matchup of the season against LSSU, GVSU dominated from the start, winning 89-48, led by 19 points from Emily Spitzley and 12 points from Nicole Kamin. The Lakers close the regular GLIAC schedule with the same team they opened with, as they take on Ferris State on Saturday. Earlier this season the Lakers defeated the Bulldogs 78-70 in Big Rapids, led by Paige Vanstee's 15 points and six rebounds, while Hannah Kulas added 14 points and eight boards. Saturday's game will also be Senior Day for GVSU, as they will honor Emily Spitzley, Hannah Kulas, and Haley Swing for their careers.

Lake Superior State enters the game at 6-18, but only 3-13 in conference, and have lost eight of their previous nine games, with the only win coming over Wayne State. The Lakers are tied with PNW for eighth place in the GLIAC standings and are still in contention for the final spot in the GLIAC tournament. LSSU is led by Mattison Rayman with 16 points per game and Margot Woughter at 15.4 points, who rank seventh and eighth in the conference in scoring. Rayman is the leading rebounder in the conference as well, at 10.5 a game, while Grace Bradford is second at 9.8 rebounds a game. GVSU has won 17 consecutive games against LSSU and leads the all-time series 63-37.

In the final game of the regular season, the Lakers take on the rival bulldogs for the second time this season. The Bulldogs are 15-10 this season and sit in sixth place in the GLIAC standings at 8-8 in conference play, coming losers of three of their previous five games, beating PNW and LSSU, while losing to Parkside, Wayne State, and SVSU. Chloe Idoni paces the Bulldog offense, as she is third in the league in scoring at 19.3 points, while also being sixth in rebounding at 7.6 boards. This will be the 106th all-time meeting between these two rivals, with GVSU leading 76-29 in the series.

Both games will be available via live stream on FloSports, live audio on the Ticket with Bryan Fongers on the call all weekend, or live stats. For full coverage of both games, including live in-game updates, follow @gvsuwbb on Twitter and visit gvsulakers.com.
