• THE GAME
#2 Grand Valley State will host #5 Pittsburg State Saturday in a NCAA DII Super Region 3 second-round game. Saturday's meeting will be the first-ever meeting between these DII powers. Kickoff is set 1 p.m. at Lubbers Stadium. 

•  The Lakers are celebrating their 52nd year of football in 2023. GVSU is the all-time winningest program in DII history with a record of 441-150-3 (.744).  In addition, GVSU is also the winningest team in GLIAC history with a 315-77-3 mark (.801). 
    
• GVSU has won a total of four national championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) in program history.

• The Lakers have made six NCAA championship appearances (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009) in program history.

• GVSU holds the Division II record for the longest winning streak at 40 consecutive wins from 2005-2007. The Lakers won two national championships during that span.
 
Last Week - #2 Grand Valley State claimed a 21-14 victory over #3 Ferris State in NCAA DII Playoff first-round action. GVSU has won 3-of-the-last-4 meeting between the two programs. QB Cade Peterson tossed two TD passes, 72 yards to Cody Tierney and 29 yards to Darrell Johnson. Tariq Reid rushed for one TD. Anthony Cardamone tallied 15 tackles and Abe Swanson 14 to lead a defense that limited FSU to 261 yards of total offense.

• The GVSU defense has held two opponents to negative rushing yards this season. Kentucky State tallied -22 rushing yards, the fourth lowest single-game total in program history, while Michigan Tech recorded -4 rushing yards.

• The Laker offense tallied 668 yards of total offense vs. Kentucky State, the eighth-best, single-game total in program history. 

• The GVSU defense has held four opponents to 187 yards of total offense or less. Saginaw Valley State recorded 142 yards (108 passing/34 rushing), Kentucky State 154 yards (176 passing/-22 rushing), Michigan Tech 161 yards (165 passing/-4 rushing) and Davenport 187 (50 rushing/137 passing). 

• Since Colorado Mines rushed for 109 yards and two TDs in the opener, Laker opponents have 494 rushing yards and three rushing TDs the last 10 games (49.4) on 275 carries (1.7 ypc). 

• The Laker defense did not allow SVSU a first down in the first half and forced 10 drives of three plays or less in the game. In addition, the Laker defense held the Cardinals to eight yards or less on 10-of-13 drives in the game.

• GVSU limited Kentucky State to -22 rushing yards and 10 drives that consisted of five plays or less. 

 • In the last nine games the GVSU offense has scored on 40-of-45 redzone opportunities, 36 TDs and four FG's. 

   The Laker defense has allowed just 21 redzone opportunities this season, allowing 14 TDs and three field goals.

• The GVSU O-Line has allowed just 16 QB sacks in the last nine games.

• The Laker defense has 11 interceptions, 37 pass breakups, 37 QB sacks and 39 QB hurries in the last nine games. 

• The Laker rushing game has tallied 2,329 yards and 31 rushing TDs in the last nine games. GVSU is averaging 258.7 yards per game and 7.2 yards per carry in that span.

• RS Freshman Kellen Reed leads the nation in kickoff return average (34.0) and kickoff returns for touchdowns (2). Reed, who has 606 yards and five TDs, is averaging 60.6 all-purpose yards per game.
