No. 10 Women’s Soccer Defeats Davenport 2-1 Friday

CALEDONIA, Mich. – The No. 10 Grand Valley State women's soccer team scored a late goal to defeat Davenport 2-1 Friday (Oct. 6) afternoon on the road at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. The Lakers improve to 7-1-3 on the season and 5-0-2 in the GLIAC.

Davenport opened the scoring early in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Lakers would respond seven minutes later in the 16th minute to tie the game at one off the foot of Alli French. The goal was French's second of the season as both teams went to the locker room tied at one.

In the second half, GVSU had two great opportunities in the 69th minute off a shot by Avery Lockwood and in the 79th minute off a shot by Taylor Reid, but both were turned away by the Panther goalkeeper.

With just over three minutes left in the game, Claire Breault took a shot with her left foot from the top right off the box that snuck its way into the goal to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. That was Breault's first career goal as a Laker and GVSU would hang on to win to remain in first place in the GLIAC standings.

GVSU outshot Davenport 12-9, 6-1 on goal. Kacy Lauer, Emma Chudik, Alli French, and Claire Breault each notched two shots with one on goal. Taylor Reid and Avery Lockwood both recorded a shot on goal. Mackenzie Ford, Mackenzie Jones, and Lauer each played all 90 minutes in the win. Goalkeeper Isabel Imes got the start in goal and earned her fourth win of the season.

The Lakers will be off this Sunday and will begin the second half of their GLIAC schedule at home when they host Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 13) under the lights at 7:00 PM before welcoming Northern Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 15) at 1:00 PM.
