UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The No. 20 Grand Valley State women's soccer team used a strong second half to play to a 2-2 draw at Saginaw Valley State Friday (Oct. 20) afternoon. The Lakers move to 7-2-5 on the season and 5-1-4 in the GLIAC.
Saginaw Valley State jumped out to the early lead. The Cardinals got a penalty kick in the 14
th minute off a Laker hand ball in the box. SVSU converted on the penalty kick to make it 1-0. Nine minutes later, Saginaw Valley State added to the lead in the 23
rd minute to make it 2-0. The Cardinals inserted a corner kick into the box where it would be headed in for the goal.
In the second half, the Lakers got off to a fast start and cut the deficit in half in the 50
th minute.
Mackenzie Jones scored her second of the season off a loose ball in front of the net in the box on a ball inserted off a corner kick.
Later in the half in the 75
th minute, the Lakers produced a corner kick where
Sophia Morgan would score directly from her corner kick. That goal was Morgan's first of the season to tie the game at two. The Lakers would produce late scoring chances but would be unable to find the go-ahead goal.
GVSU outshot SVSU 20-11 and 12-6 on goal. The Lakers notched seven corner kicks, while holding the Cardinals to just one.
Kacy Lauer led the Lakers with three shots and two on goal. Morgan and
Avery Lockwood each notched two shots on goal, while Jones and
Ella Kleiver each added two shots with one on goal.
Isabel Imes got the start in goal for the Lakers and made four saves. Jones and
Daan Louwerse saw all 90 minutes of play.
