Volleyball Returns To GLIAC Play Against LSSU and Ferris State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – After a week off of GLIAC play to take part in the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament, the GVSU women's volleyball team is back in league play this weekend to play LSSU and Ferris State. The two Lakers' will matchup Friday evening in Allendale at 6:00, before GVSU heads up to Big Rapids to play Ferris State Saturday afternoon at 3:00.

The Lakers went 2-1 at the Crossover Tournament, defeating both Northwood and #25. Rockhurst in straight sets and falling to #15 Lewis in five sets. After their performance, GVSU is now receiving 30 votes in the latest AVCA poll. Sarah Wight led the entire tournament with 15 blocks and 1.36 blocks per set and was named to the All-Tournament team. In the win over Rockhurst, Rachel Jacquay recorded her 1,000th career dig, making her the 12th player in program history to record 1,000 digs, and just the second to have 1,000 digs and over 3,500 assists. At 16-2, and 8-1 in conference play, GVSU is in second place in the GLIAC standings heading into the weekend, just one game back of Ferris State.
 
LSSU also went 2-1 at the Crossover, beating Malone and Lake Erie, sandwiched around a loss to Southwest Baptist. The Lakers are 6-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play, placing them eighth in the GLIAC standings. The Lakers are paced offensively by two seniors, Mariana Velasque and Emilee McDaniel who both have over 200 kills. Velasque leads the conference 290 kills, while McDaniel's 203 rank ninth. Those two are set by the leading assister in the GLIAC in Emily Kalinowski, who has dished 726 assists on the year, good for 9.55 per set. Their 1,114 digs rank second in the GLIAC, led by Ally Lasley's 267. GVSU is on a 55-game winning streak against LSSU, not losing since 1989, only dropping sets in 11 of the matches.
 
Saturday will matchup the top two teams in the conference, when GVSU travels up 131 to take on Ferris State. The Bulldogs are undefeated in conference play at 9-0, and they are 16-4 overall. At the Crossover, the beat both Indianapolis and Findlay, but fell to UMSL on the final day. Libero Leah Bylut earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after tallying 51 digs on the weekend, and now has 289 this season, ranking fifth in the league. Setter Kaylee Maat has 10.04 assists per set, tops in the GLIAC, and her top target is junior middle hitter Olivia Henneman-Dallape, who has slammed down 244 kills this season. FSU will be the third ranked opponent the Lakers will play in a span of four games, as they came in at 17th in the latest AVCA poll.
