No. 8 GVSU Blanks Purdue Northwest 8-0 Sunday Afternoon

Three Lakers scored multiple goals in the win

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 8 Grand Valley State women's soccer team shutout Purdue Northwest 8-0 Sunday (Sept. 18) afternoon on alumni day. The Lakers improve their record to 5-1-2 and 3-0-1 in the GLIAC, while Purdue Northwest falls to 0-7-1 and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
 
The Lakers dominated from start to finish that saw three Lakers score multiple goals. GVSU did not allow a single Purdue Northwest shot, dominating the shot category 34-0, 15-0 on goal.
 
The Lakers got on the board early in the 4' minute on a goal by Taylor Reid for her third of the season. Mackenzie Jones played a great ball to Kennedy Bearden who made a great cross for Reid to head it home. The Lakers would make it 2-0 in the 18' minute when Kennedy Bearden scored her third goal of the year. Bearden made a nice move to create space from the defender at the top left of the box where she sent it over the stretched arm of the goalkeeper.
 
Four minutes later, Reid added her second of the half off a great lead pass by Ryann Fetty. Reid tracked down the pass and made a move past the goalkeeper and had an easy tap in for the goal. In the 38' minute, freshman Sophia Morgan added another goal to make it 4-0 for her first collegiate goal. Brooke Russell sent a ball into the box off a free kick that was hit by the goalkeeper but landed right to Morgan who placed the ball into the bottom left corner into the goal. The Lakers took that 4-0 lead into the half, leading 17-0 in shots. 
 
In the second half, the Laker picked right where they left off, scoring again in the 56' minute. Mackenzie Jones netted her first goal of the season off a great pass by Bearden for her second assist of the game. Two minutes later, Bearden added her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to make it 6-0 off a great free kick ball from Mackenzie Ford for her third assist of the season. Two more minutes later in the 60' minute, Mackenzie Jones scored second of the half to make it 7-0 off a free kick that was sent in the box by Hannah Becker. Alicia White got in on the fun in the 81' minute with her first goal of the season. Cece McCarthy sent a nice cross from the right side to the left side of the box for White to put it home with the right foot.
 
Kendall Robertson got the start in net for the Lakers and played 56' minutes in the win not facing a shot. Callie Rich played 33' minutes in net and did not face a shot. Reid, Bearden, and Jones each scored two goals, while Bearden added two assists and Jones dished out one assist. Morgan and White netted their first goals of the season and McCarthy dished out her first collegiate assist. Nina Ferraro and Hannah Becker led all Laker field players with 55 minutes played. All 23 field players that saw action played at least 20 minutes.
 
The Lakers will be back home next weekend when they host Northern Michigan on Friday (Sept. 23) under the lights at 7:00 PM and Michigan Tech on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 12:00 PM.
