ST. LOUIS – The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 3-0 shutout win over Missouri S&T Thursday (Aug. 25) on the campus of Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. The Lakers open the season at 1-0, while Missouri S&T falls to 0-1. Katie Hultin gets her first career win as the head coach for the Lakers.
The Lakers were dominate throughout the entire game as they outshot the miners 15-2. Three Lakers scored their first career goals in a Laker uniform on two assists in a total team effort win.
The Lakers got off to a fast start when
Nina Ferraro scored her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute on the first shot attempt of the game.
Kennedy Bearden sent a great insert from the right side into the box where Ferraro was there to put it home with the right foot.
The Lakers would make it a 2-0 game in the 37' minute with freshman
Abby Winn scoring her first collegiate goal. Winn collected the ball from outside the box off a clear attempt, made a move to her right to get past the defender and then beat the keeper with a dart to the bottom right corner of the goal.
GVSU would go into halftime with a 2-0 lead, out shooting the Miners 5-1, 2-1 on goal.
Kendall Robertson recorded a save on the lone shot from Missouri S&T.
The Lakers picked up right where they left off in the second half, scoring in the 50' minute.
Riley O'Brien netted her first career goal as a Laker off a great feed from
Ryann Fetty. Fetty got past the defender on the left end line and crossed it to the top of the box for O'Brien to put it top shelf with the left foot.
The Lakers defense was impressive as they would hold the Miners to only two shots.
Kendall Robertson got the start between the pipes and played 74 minutes in the win, stopping both shots she faced.
Callie Rich also got time in net but did not face any shots.
