Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 1 Soccer Defeats Maryville, 1-0, Saturday

Starts season 2-0 after shutout win

ST. LOUIS – The No. 1 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated Maryville 1-0, Saturday (Aug. 27) at the Maryville Soccer Field in St. Louis, Missouri. The Lakers improve to 2-0 on the early season, while Maryville falls to 1-1.

The Lakers came out the gates strong, dominating possession and creating several scoring chances. Ryann Fetty found the back of the net in the 16' minute off a great feed from Nina Ferraro for her first goal of the season.  Ferraro made a nice spin move to get past the Maryville defender where she placed a great lead at the middle of box for Fetty to run down and sneak the ball under the keeper who was coming to make a play on the ball.

Fetty's goal would end up being the difference maker as the Laker defense was outstanding again in the win, holding the Saints to just six shot attempts and four corner kicks. Overall, the Lakers out shot the Saints 14-6, 4-3 on goal. Kendall Robertson played all 90 minutes between the pipes, earning her second shutout of the early season after stopping all three shots of the six attempts faced.

Kennedy Bearden led the Laker offense with three shot attempts, two on goal, while Kennedy Metzger and Ryann Fetty each had two shot attempts. Nina Ferraro dished out her first assist of the season and led all field players with 81 minutes played. Eighteen field players saw at least 20 minutes of action in the win.

The Lakers will return to action Friday (Sept. 2) for their home opener as they host No. 6 Central Missouri at the GVSU Soccer Field at 7:00 PM. Follow @GVSUSoccer on Twitter for live in-game updates and visit gvsulakers.com for links to live stats and live video.
