GVSU Baseball Concludes Regular Season With 11-3 Senior Day Win Over Parkside

Lakers will play Northwood in GLIAC Tourney opener Thursday

The Grand Valley State baseball team concluded regular season action Sunday with a Senior Day victory over Parkside by an 11-3 score. The Lakers (30-18) will play Northwood Thursday in the GLIAC Tournament at 7 p.m. The 2022 GLIAC Tourney will be held in Gary, Indiana at United States Steel Yard Stadium. 

Parkside built a 2-0 lead before the Lakers pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third on two hits. RF Carter Smith walked and CF Spencer Nelson was hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt from LF Kyle Nott and an intentional walk to 1B Nate Logan, C Brendan Guciardo single to right to plate two runs. Logan scored on a wild pitch and 3B Jake Rydquist drove in a run with a single to center. GVSU added five runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. DH Justin Mansager singled in a run, Smith added a 2-run single, Faust scored on an error and 2B Connor Schuman scored on a wild pitch. 

Schuman singled and drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth, while Logan singled in Nott in the seventh. 

Senior RHP Mak Scannell picked up the win on the mound, yielding two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Joseph Huesing pitched 2.1 innings of 1-hit ball, while senior RHP Nathan Wargolet got the final two outs.

Logan was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and reached base five times. Guciardo and Smith each drove in two runs, while Rydquist was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Mansager and Schuman each collected a hit and an RBI, while Nott and Faust each tallied a hit and scored a run. 

Senior SS Christian Faust and pitchers Mark Scannell, Nick Shaw, Joseph Huesing, Nathan Wargolet and Ben Thomas were honored prior to the game.
