INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 21 Grand Valley State softball team is headed to the NCAA Midwest Super Regionals after a 15-1 route of the Findlay Oilers in five innings on Saturday (May 14) morning at Baumgartner Field. The Lakers improve to 43-6 on the season and are two wins away from a third straight trip to the Women's College World Series.
The 3-seed in the region, the Lakers swept through the Indianapolis bracket to advance to next week's best-of-three super regional where they will either host 8-seed Saginaw Valley or visit top-seeded Southern Indiana, depending on outcomes in the USI bracket on Saturday. Saginaw Valley needs one win to clinch an all-GLIAC supers while USI would need two wins to host next weekend's round.
The Lakers scored early and often, using 18 hits to match their highest run total in a game this season. They got started early, plating three runs in the visitors' first on a two-out, RBI single by
Kelsey Komorous then a ringing two-run double from fellow freshman
Morgan Spicer. Komorous would launch her first home run of her career, a two-run shot, as part of a 10-run third inning that broke the game wide open.
Four Lakers had multiple RBI in the game, led by Komorous' three to give her six driven in for the regional. Spicer,
Joanna Cirrincione and
Lydia Goble all drove in a pair. Cirrincione also scored three times. Every Laker in the starting lineup both drove in and scored at least one run.
Hannah Beatus (W, 21-3) went three innings and allowed her first run of the tournament on one hit and a pair of walks, all three of which came in the same frame.
Genesis Eggart hurled a pair of scoreless innings to close things out in her first-career NCAA Tournament appearance.
