ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept a doubleheader from the Wayne State Warriors Saturday (April 23) on senior day at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers won game one, 7-1, then walked off with a run-rule win, 11-3, in game two. The Lakers improve to 34-5 on the season and 19-3 in GLIAC action with six games to play.
The Lakers struck early in game one, recording four straight singles to start the home first, including an RBI poke by
Kelsey Komorous.
Hannah Hollister would loft a fly out deep enough to plate another run later in the inning before
Joanna Cirrincione unloaded on one, clearing the fence in right, for her second home run of the season and a two-run shot to make it 4-0 Lakers after two innings. Cirrincione was 3-4 in the game with a pair of runs and two RBI.
The Warriors got on back in the fifth on back-to-back two-out hits but the Lakers pulled away with a three-run sixth.
Lydia Goble bunted for a hit to push a run across, then Komorous fouled out down the third base line, but heads up baserunning turned it into a sacrifice fly, and
Taylor Rieger hammered one off the fence in right for an RBI double.
Hannah Beatus (W, 16-2) threw another complete game, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six and walking one. With the win, Beatus avenged her only loss in GLIAC play this season, allowing one earned run in 16.2 innings of work against Wayne State in two outings.
The Lakers again struck early in game two, scoring twice in the first on RBI doubles from Goble and Rieger. Then they erupted for a four-run second; scoring on an error, then a Cirrincione two-run single, before a double-play ground out let another run across.
The Warriors cut the Laker lead in half in the third on just one hit. Two hit batters (both on the hand right near the knob of the bat) and a walk loaded the bases before Wayne State's first hit of the day brought all three in with two outs in the inning.
The Lakers responded with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a Warrior error to regain the six-run lead.
Janalee Lyke doubled home a run on her senior day in the sixth, finding the rightfield line to allow Rieger, who got on with her third hit of the game, to score from first then
Morgan Wagner found the gap in left-center to bring home the winning run.
The Lakers begin a six-game road trip to close out the regular season on Sunday (April 24) when they visit Saginaw Valley with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm in University Center.
