ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 10 Grand Valley State softball team split a doubleheader with the Ferris State Bulldogs on a cold, rainy Saturday (April 2) at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers won game one, 3-1, before falling 8-3, in game two. The Lakers are now 17-4 on the season and 2-2 in GLIAC action. The Lakers are back at it Sunday (April 3) at 1 PM with a home doubleheader against the Northwood Timberwolves.
A three-run first inning proved to be enough for the Lakers in game one. After a leadoff walk,
Taylor Rieger laced a double into right-center to plate
Joanna Cirrincione from first.
Lydia Goble would follow up with a single up the middle to bring around Rieger, then eventually score on an RBI-groundout by
Morgan Wagner.
Hannah Beatus (W, 8-1) went the distance again and allowed one run on three hits while striking out five without walking a batter.
Ferris State hit two home runs in the first inning, then another in the third, to open up a 4-0 lead in the second game. The Lakers responded with a three-run fourth to get back within a run, but a diving effort with two outs and the bases loaded the next inning came up just short and the Bulldogs got the three runs right back to pull away for the win.
