GVSU Baseball splits Tuesday doubleheader against Purdue Northwest

Won game one 10-5, dropped game two 5-4

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team concluded their season series against Purdue Northwest with a doubleheader split Tuesday (April 19) at the GVSU baseball field. The Lakers move to 23-13 overall, 6-6 in conference play. GVSU will travel to Saginaw Valley State on Friday, April 22 for the start of a four-game series.
 
Game one – W, 10-5
 
Purdue Northwest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a 2-run double to right center. In the fifth, the Lakers brought across five runs to take a 5-2 lead. Spencer Nelson got GVSU on the board with a sacrifice fly. Next batter, Kyle Nott hit a 2-run single to right that gave the Lakers the lead. On the very next pitch, Christian Faust launched his sixth home run of the year to give the Lakers a 3-run lead. 
 
GVSU would add five more runs in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead. Kyle Nott notched his fourth RBI of the game with a single to left field that scored Zach Collins. Christian Faust singled that scored Nott and Logan scored Faust after reaching on a Purdue Northwest error. 
 
Colby Phipps got the start on the mound and earned the win (3-2) after tossing 6.1 innings allowing five runs off seven hits, while striking out three Purdue Northwest batters. Jake Rydquist recorded the final two outs of the game in his second pitching appearance this year.
 
Kyle Nott led the Lakers going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI's and two runs scored. Christian Faust went 2-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Jake Rydquist batted 1-2 with two runs scored, while Carter Smith and Cade Stanton each scored a run.
 
Game two – L, 5-4
 
Purdue Northwest jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an infield single.  The Lakers tied the game in the bottom half of the frame. GVSU would score two in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Spencer Nelson hit a sacrifice fly, followed by a Kyle Nott 2-run single to left field. Nott would extend the lead for the Lakers in the fourth inning with a single through the right side that scored Nelson.
 
Purdue Northwest made it a one run game in the sixth on an RBI groundout and RBI single. The Pride would tie the game in the eighth with an RBI single through the right side. In the ninth, Purdue Northwest took the lead on an RBI single to left field and would hang on for the 5-4 win.
 
Rylan Peets got the start on the mound and recorded a no decision after tossing 6.0 innings allowing three runs off eight hits, while striking out four. Logan Wynalda was tagged with the loss (1-1). Kyle Nott batted 3-4 with a run scored and a run batted in, while Spencer Nelson hit 2-4 with a run scored and one run batted in. Justin Mansager went 2-4 with a walk at the plate.
