No. 20 spilts doubleheader against Northwood

Split both doubleheader's in GLIAC weekend opener

MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 20 Grand Valley State baseball team split today's doubleheader against Northwood. The Lakers went 2-2 this weekend against the Timberwolves and are now 19-9 on the season. GVSU will host Purdue Northwest Tuesday (April 12) in a doubleheader starting at 1:05 pm.
 
Game one – L, 4-3
 
Northwood got on the board early in the first inning off an RBI single to left field. The Timberwolves added to the lead in the second by scoring three in the inning to take a 4-0 lead. GVSU got on the board in the sixth off a Jake Rydquist RBI single. Spencer Nelson drove in a run later in the inning to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. In the seventh, Connor Schuman hit a sacrifice fly to get GVSU within one. The comeback fell just short as Northwood was able to close it out in the seventh.
 
Colby Phipps got the start on the mound and was tagged with the loss (2-2) going 4.o innings allowing four runs off four hits. Logan Wynalda pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Nathan Logan went 2-3, while Jake Rydquist batted 1-2 with an RBI.
 
Game two – W, 10-4
 
After a scoreless first inning, Christian Faust gave the Lakers their first lead of the day with 2-RBI single to center field that scored Jake Rydquist and Spencer Nelson. Next batter, Nathan Logan crushed a 3-run homer over the center field wall for his sixth of the season to make it 5-0. In the top of the fifth, Brendan Guciardo made it 7-0 in favor of GVSU with a 2-RBI single up the middle to score Faust and Logan.
 
Northwood got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth off a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1. Next half inning, Nathan Logan drove in his fourth RBI of the game to give GVSU a 7-run lead again. Later in the inning, Brendan Guciardo drove in his third RBI of the game with a 2-RBI single scoring Kyle Nott and Faust that made to 10-1. Northwood would score three in the seventh and was unable to score after that.
 
Mark Scannell got the start and picked up his second win of the season (2-0) tossing 6.2 innings allowing four runs off six hits, while striking out three. Logan and Guciardo each went 2-4 on the game. Logan led the Lakers with four RBI's, while Guciardo drove in three. Spencer Nelson batted 3-6 with a runs scored, while Christian Faust drove in two runs and scored three times. Kyle Nott and Jake Rydquist each scored twice.
