Brandon Miller Breaks the 200m Record at the Snowdown Showdown

ALLENDALE, Mich. -  Grand Valley State freshman, Brandon Miller, broke the school record in the men's 200m dash on Friday, Feb. 4 at the Snowdown Showdown with a personal-best time of 21.57. Miller's time makes it within the NCAA DII provisional time of 21.69, and he is currently the only GLIAC athlete to be qualified on the men's side. The previous GVSU record was set in 2015 by Sean Wells with a time of 21.62.

"We took a step in the right direction with our performances today," said assistant coach Reynaldo Radlin. "The team is inching closer and closer to the bigger performances when it matters the most. We look forward to getting back to practice to work on a few things as we get ready for the Big Meet and the championship season. 

Miller also placed fourth in the 60m with a time of 7.04, and first in the 4x400m with a personal-best time of 3:12.92. Working with Miller in the 4x400m, Caelon Harkey finished second in the 200m with a personal-best time of 21.82. Harkey also placed first in the 400m with a personal-best time of 48.11 and is ninth in the Nation. Myles Rhodes finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 21.92, followed by Jackson Blanchard in sixth with a time of 22.06. Blanchard placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.17, and teammate Makiyah Smallwood claimed second with a season-best time of 8.00. 

In the field, Eli Kimes jumped past the four meter mark with a season-best height of 4.04m in pole vault and is now sixth in the Nation. Kassidy Stimmel placed second with a season-best height of 3.94m, currently sitting 11th in the DII. In the men's pole vault, the men finished first,second, and third with Jacob Krutsch taking the overall victory. Krutsch won the event clearing the bar, on his first attempt, at a personal-best height of 4.66m. James Nutt took second with a season-best height of 4.66m, followed by Max Rauch in third (4.51m). 

Eli Kosiba remained on top in the men's high jump as he claimed his third win of the season with a height of 2.14m. Jonathan Rankins-James reach new heights clearing a personal-best 2.10m finishing second, followed by Caleb Taylor in third with a personal-best height of 1.96m. Lindsey Strutz finished second on the women's side with a season-best height of 1.59m. 

The women's throws team was led by Emma Richards finishing second in the shot put invite with a personal-best distance of 15.23m. Judith Essemiah placed second in the women's weight throw invite with a distance of 19.82m, followed by Alaina Omonode with a personal-best distance of 18.34m. Matt Thomas led the men's side with a second place finish in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 17.73m. Brad Warman placed third (15.49m) and Nathan Spitzley in fourth (15.25m). Hunter Harding finished fourth in the men's weight throw with a distance of 19.68m. 

The Lakers next host the GVSU Big Meet on Feb. 11-12 in Allendale, Mich. at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
