No. 3 GVSU Women’s Basketball Travels to Davenport and Hosts Northwood

Lakers celebrate Senior Day in last regular season home game

The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers are on the road Thursday as they travel to Davenport for the Crosstown Showdown with tip off set for 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 19, GVSU will host Northwood for their last regular-season home game and celebrate Senior Day, honoring seniors Qay Stanton and Samantha Gehrls. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m. 

The Lakers are currently sitting in first in the GLIAC with a 14-1 conference record and were voted No. 3 in the nation in this week's polls. GVSU advanced to 21-1 last Saturday, after defeating Michigan Tech 61-45 in their 16th win in a row this season. 

Senior Emily Spitzley, sophomore Rylie Bisballe, and sophomore Ellie Droste continue to lead the way offensively for the Lakers. Spitzley is averaging 13.0 points per game, while Bisballe is averaging 12.6 points per game and is the leading rebounder, grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game. Droste is averaging 11.6 points per game and is second in the GLIAC in three point percentage (45.5%). 

The Lakers will travel to DU for the Crosstown Showdown on Thursday for their second matchup against the Panthers. GVSU defeated the Davenport Panthers earlier this season in a 73-38 victory at home. Shooting 54% from the floor and 50% from behind the arc, Emily Spitzley led the Lakers with 20 points and six three pointers. Senior Qay Stanton and junior Haley Swing finished with 11 points apiece, followed by sophomores Rylie Bisballe and Hadley Miller who each finished with 10 points. DU is currently last in the GLIAC with a 1-15 conference record and 2-22 overall record. 

This Saturday GVSU will take on the Northwood Timberwolves at home on Senior Day. The Lakers defeated NU 65-53 in their first matchup earlier this season. Ellie Droste led Grand Valley with 18 points, followed by Emily Spitzley and Rylie Bisballe who also chipped in 13 points a piece. The Timberwolves are sitting in seventh in the conference with a 9-7 GLIAC record and a 15-8 overall record.
