Laker Defense Leads Way in Road Victory Against Quincy

QUINCY, Ill.—The Grand Valley State men's basketball team earned a road victory, beating Quincy, 63-59, on Tuesday night at Pepsi Arena.

The defense stepped up in crunch time for the Lakers (4-6) to secure a victory. With 1:11 remaining in the game, GVSU's lead was just two. From that point on, the Lakers did not surrender another point. They forced a turnover and blocked the Hawks' (4-5) final shot of the game.

Trevon Gunter led GVSU with 15 points, making five of his eight attempts from the field, including a 2-for-3 night from 3-point range, but it was the big men who were a dominant force for GVSU.

Chinedu Kingsley Okanu scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Okanu made the final free throw of the night to put the game away for the Lakers. Marius Grazulis added 10 points and eight rebounds.

All-in-all, the defense was stout on Tuesday night, allowing the Hawks to shoot just 37.3 percent from the floor and 25 percent from distance (5-for-20). The Lakers forced 17 turnovers as well.

GVSU (45.4 percent) outshot Quincy (37.3 percent) from the field. The Lakers four wins this season have all come when they outshoot their opponents. GVSU outscored the Hawks 40-32 in the paint and held a 20-13 advantage in fast break points.

The Lakers led it at the half, 28-24, and all four of their wins this season have seen halftime leads.

GVSU returns home to take on Davenport on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WXSP locally and available to watch online via FloSports.
