Women's Basketball Set For Post Holiday Break Game Versus Grace Christian

12.27.2022

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's basketball team gets back in action post-holiday break tomorrow afternoon as they play Grace Christian in the Fieldhouse Arena at 4pm.

The Lakers continue their perfect start, sitting at 11-0 with just two more nonconference games before the bulk of GLIAC play begins in January. GVSU held onto the top spot in the WBCA rankings after defeating D'Youville and Wheeling in their final two contests before the holidays. Emily Spitzley had two big games, scoring 16 and then a season-high 26 points in the win over Wheeling, and now is just 41 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She continues to lead the team in scoring at 15.3 a game. Ellie Droste had a season-high 19 versus Wheeling and is up to 12 points a game. The Lakers continue to dominate opponents, as they are top-10 in the country in scoring offense (84.1) and scoring defense (53.1), which leads to a scoring margin of 31 points, which is tops in the nation.

GVSU is also atop the GLIAC standings at 3-0 in conference play. Four teams are one behind in the loss column, as Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, and Parkside are all 3-1 in league play, while SVSU is 2-1 since GLIAC play began. Ferris State is the only other league member that was mentioned in the most recent WBCA poll, as they were receiving votes. GLIAC play will pick back up in the new year, as the Lakers will start on the road in the first weekend, taking on Parkside and Purdue Northwest.

Grace Baptist comes into the game on a three-game losing streak, getting beat 102-52 by Spring Arbor in their most recent game. The Tigers are under the direction of interim head coach Quinn Adams, who is in his first year at the helm of Grace Christian. The Tigers score just under 70 points a game, but have struggled shooting the ball this season, shooting just 37.7% from the field and 25% from distance. The offense is led by Ashlyn Wilkes and MaKensie Mondy who are both scoring in double-figures, with Wilkes at 17.1 and Mondy scoring 16.5. Forward Jada Reese is close to averaging a double-double at 9.4 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Tigers. This game will mark the first ever meeting between these two programs.
