ALLENDALE, MICH. – Coming off a 2-0 road weekend to begin the season, the Grand Valley women's basketball team begins the home schedule this weekend with matchups against Tiffin on Friday (6pm) then Findlay on Saturday (3pm).
Last weekend the Lakers defeated Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville on the road to open up the season. GV beat UMSL 81-55 and Maryville 78-57, as they began a season 2-0 for the sixth straight year.
Emily Spitzley led the way in scoring in both games, scoring 12 in the opener and 16 to close out the weekend. Spitzley was also the leading rebounder for GVSU, pulling down 5 boards in the opener and 7 the following day.
Joslyn Brennan and
Hannah Kulas each scored in double-figures against UMSL, while
Ellie Droste,
Nicole Kamin, and Kulas all had double-figures against Maryville.
Tiffin has begun the season 2-1, as they beat McKendree and Illinois-Springfield to open the season before falling to Mercyhurst on Wednesday. The Dragons were picked to finish 10
th in the GMAC preseason poll, as they enter year one under new head coach Josh Mason. Tiffin returns three regular starters from a season ago with Savanah Richards, Jada Tate, and Kirsten Williams all coming back for the Dragons. Richards and Tate each averaged over nine points per game, while Williams had over seven points and four rebounds. The two teams haven't played since 2018, when the Dragons left the GLIAC, and GVSU has won all 12 of the previous meetings between the two teams.
Findlay is also beginning the season under a first-year head coach, as the Oilers are under the new direction of Michele Durand. Findlay is 1-1 on the young season, as they have defeated LSSU and falling to SVSU this past weekend. Findlay returns four players from a season ago who started 12 or more games, led by Lauren Hapgood and Janae Hoying who each averaged 6.5 points last year. This season junior guard Kate Ellis leads the team in scoring at 12.5 per game and she is also the leading rebounder, pulling down seven per game.
