Volleyball Prepares For GLIAC Semifinal Matchup With Northern Michigan

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team moved on to the GLIAC semifinal round with a dramatic five set victory over Davenport last night, and now face Northern Michigan Friday evening at 6:30 for a chance to go to the championship round.
 
The Lakers beat the Panthers in five sets last night (22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 12-25, 15-12) to advance, while the Wildcats beat SVSU in four sets in their quarterfinal matchup. This will be the third meeting between the teams this season, with NMU winning both matches over GV, sweeping them in the first match at home, then winning in five sets in the next one, played in Allendale. This matchup will be a neutral site contest, with the game being played at Ferris State as they are the top team remaining in the tournament.
 
Jordyn Gates recorded her 11th triple-double of the season last night, with 20 kills, 23 assists, and 22 digs, and leads the team with 315 kills and 376 digs. Kendall Stover has 312 kills, after getting 14 in the quarterfinal round. Sarah Wight has 268 kills and a team-high 75 blocks this season. The Lakers have the most kills in the conference with 1534 kills, over 40 more than the next highest team, and they have the second most digs at 1934. GVSU has won four of their last six matches, and are 6-3 in neutral site games this season.
 
Northern Michigan is riding a five-game win streak coming into the semifinal match, with four of those wins being sweeps. The Wildcats are the number two seed in the GLIAC after going 23-7 overall and 14-4 in the conference. NMU is led offensively by Jacqueline Smith, who ranks second in the GLIAC with 498 kills and 4.45 kills per set. Their setter Lauren Van Remortel is second in the conference with 1085 assists. As a team, the Wildcats are the second worst blocking team in the conference, only recording 144 on the year, but they are one of the best serving team, tallying 207 service aces this season.
